Grade 3 – Sample Lesson

My Body

Quick Downloads:

Begin by having students share what they know about various body parts, how parts of their own bodies work, and how their brain interacts with different parts of their body.  Have a brief discussion about confirming what they know about naming different parts of their body, what the different parts of their body do, and how they work to keep their body safe and healthy.

Ask:

  • What can your body do?
  • What are parts of the body?
  • What do the outside parts of your body do?
  • What do the inside parts of your body do?
  • What does your brain do?

Students complete pre-assessment

Use the body diagram and have students label different parts of the body. Assess what parts of the body are labeled initially.  Students will return to this diagram at the end of the lesson.

Teacher note: Notice which parts students are already familiar with and those they are not.

Read Chapter 1

After reading, ask:

  • How does the brain interact with other parts of the body?
  • What else do you know about the brain?

Post Assessment

Students will look again at their diagram from the beginning of the lesson and fill in any additional parts they can identify.

Reflection/Looking Ahead

Have students self-assess by putting a star next to the new parts of their bodies they were able to identify after the lesson.

Exit ticket: How will you work to keep your brain healthy and safe?

Play the song and display words for students to follow along.

Next lesson, we will be learning more about the brain.
